Documenting a birthday: How professional photography helps relieve stress | St. Louis Photographer

Both my kids have birthdays at the beginning of April. As they’ve grown older this can get a little sticky as they both want different themes and invite different people. Last year, I held two different parties at the same time…in my house…never again, I might add! This year was a little less chaotic with each child having their party at a different time.

I love to host birthday parties and as a photographer, I make sure to capture the important moments of them but I’ve noticed there’s something special when I enter a birthday party to document it for a client. The mom might still be stressed with final touches on food prep, but there’s one less thing off her plate. Here are three ways hiring a professional photographer helps relieve stress during a birthday party.

1. The mom gets to be present

While some might argue you’re in the room even if you’re taking a photo, I believe it’s different. Often if I’m not careful, I can get so wrapped up in capturing moments that I fail to be fully present in the moment. (Side note: Concerts are a struggle for me. I can get so carried away taking photos or video that I’m not in the moment. I make sure to put my phone away after a few shots.)

When it’s a milestone birthday (like your child’s first), you don’t want to miss out on anything but being behind a phone or camera does just that. You’re not connected to the moments and being fully present with your child, celebrating their birthday.

2. No pressure to capture every moment

No need to follow closely behind the birthday boy capturing every facial feature or how they respond to that slice of cake laid in front of him, you have a photographer for that! It’s a challenge to try to serve your child cake with a candle on top, plus capture moments. A photographer will simply blend into the background documenting the birthday party flawlessly.

3. Built-in confidence

Most photographers will capture a variety of images ranging from the events of the party (cake smash, opening gifts, play, etc) and details of the decorations and theme. When you hire a photographer to document a birthday party, you can rest knowing you’ll receive a collection of beautifully curated images that showcase the beautiful moments of the celebration.

“Having a photographer at my kids birthday parties was a game changer! I felt like I could be more present and enjoy the moment more because I wasn’t worried about trying to get all of the pictures taken. Nicole already had it taken care of!” – Ashley, Client + Sister-in-law
