Washington, Missouri is a city that sits on the Mississippi River in Franklin County. The city’s downtown area and main street lie just a few blocks from the river’s edge.
Years ago, I had a job in sales and drove to Washington to visit some of my clients. I drove through the downtown area and thought it was a charming area that I wanted to visit again and recently I got to. There were so many cute shops lining the main street I wanted to visit them all!
The first shop I stepped into I was quickly welcomed by owner, Michael Lause. Country Living-General Store has a huge selection of Missouri food products, which I eagerly looked through. Lause quickly offered me samples of many of the items on their shelves and told me all about the business. He shared that he started the shop after retiring and the shop is located in what was once a jewelry store where he bought his wife’s engagement ring! The shop also sells antiques, books, quilts and much more. It was so much fun talking to Lause and hearing about the business he owns with his wife, Gail, I will come back to pick up more Missouri products as well as say hello!
While I didn’t get to visit the Washington Farmers’ Market since it wasn’t a Saturday, I was eager to come during the weekend to get the chance to see their setup with over 20 vendors. Open Saturdays 8am to 1pm, April through October.
Located across from Country Living, The Painted Home boasts a large selection of lifestyle, furniture and décor items plus host DIY workshops and parties. I picked up a beautiful wooden charcuterie board and a white coffee mug stating Momma’s Juice on it. There were so many cute things in this shop I could have redone many things in my home!
Speaking of coffee, I stopped at Scudder & Co Coffee on Main to pick up some coffee from Reconstruction Coffee Roasters, a roaster in Villa Ridge. In addition to the bags of coffee they offer espressos, teas, deserts, pastries and Kim’s candy buffet.
While Washington was a little of a drive for me, I found its history, friendly residents and Downtown area so charming and worth driving back to discover more.
