Not many people wear Easter bonnets but many people still use this special holiday to dress up and capture the moment. I usually capture moments of my family in the front of our house before heading to church. Here are four tips as you prepare to capture an Easter photo.
Clean your lens
Whether you have a camera or planning to use your phone, cleaning your lens can make a huge difference. Our phones especially gather dust and dirt which can hinder from getting a clear image.
Pick a good location
Make a mental list of locations that would work for a family photo. Pick a spot that isn’t too sunny or has a super busy background which could take away from the subject in the photo. Avoid a place where the sun is behind the subject (backlit) because you won’t get a crisp image. Think of a place that may be lit well but may provide shade so your family won’t have squinty faces. Since I normally take a photo before church in the morning, a great space is in our front yard and utilize the front porch for our Easter photo.
Find a stable surface
While a tripod for a camera or phone will work wonderfully for your shot, you can make many things in house a solid surface to balance your phone against. I set up a basic tripod to hold my phone upright with a stack of books that would work perfectly. Engineering a tripod can be easy to do, just make sure that material doesn’t obstruct your lens.

Set up the shot
Most will use a phone to capture photos so I wanted to give a few tips specifically for setting up your phone.
Make sure to use the main camera – We aren’t going to take a selfie.
Set your timer – If you have a watch that can trigger your phone, three seconds will work well but if you’re going to trigger it and then move into the shot, I recommend to give yourself the 10 seconds.
No portrait mode – Portrait mode is better suited for one to two people so if you have a larger group you’ll want to do the basic shot.
Landscape vs Vertical – The larger the group, the better the landscape shot will be to make sure to capture everyone.
Wishing you a wonderful Easter and wish these photography tips will help you capture a beautiful family photo on Sunday!
