Shorty’s Surprise | St. Louis Event Photographer

I think surprise parties are so much fun! Whenever I get a chance to capture moments of them I jump at the chance. When my mother began planning my grandmother’s 90th surprise party I was eager to capture the moments for her.

We lured my grandma to come to my parents’ church, thinking she was attending a Christmas concert. My dad did a tremendous job at the ruse, even coming home to change into his performance attire and grabbing his trumpet. At the church, all the kids were eager to spot Shorty coming and self designated them as lookouts.

The most memorable moment was when Shorty entered the room and she slowly realized she wasn’t there for a concert but her own party. She was clearly surprised! Kids, grandkids, great grandkids, nephews, nieces and long-time friends were all in attendance to celebrate her birthday with her. Capturing hugs, smiles and laughter made up most of my night.

There’s nothing like capturing the candid moments at a surprise party. The excitement of those waiting to yell “surprise” and the usually astonished facial features of the honoree are some of my favorite shots to capture. It made it more special that it was my own grandma I got to capture the moments for!
