What’s Saving My Life – Winter 2026 | St. Louis Photographer

It’s a new year and with it, it’s also the dead of winter. I have a love/hate relationship with winter. I love it because it’s the start of a new year, in a ways a fresh start. Celebrating my birthday is another highlight of the season and I celebrate all month long!

Winter is hard though. Although it’s getting lighter longer, it still gets dark early. Another hard thing is it’s cold, and I don’t do cold. Lastly, this season is hard, because it’s drab and it take me time to see the beauty in the outdoors (it’s there I promise but I have to train myself to see it). During this season of hard, there are a few things saving my life.

365 Photo Challenge

Last year I attempted to capture at least one photo every week but faded into the February. This year I’m attempting the challenge again! So far with January almost complete I have successfully captured a moment each day. The challenge also gives me an opportunity to strengthen my photography and creative skills, which is a blessing.

Reading

I absolutely love reading so it shouldn’t come as a surprise it’s something that’s saving my life this winter. During the recent snow storm, I was able to complete two audiobooks and loved every moment. I enjoy listening to fiction and biographies while reading physical books on the Bible, discipleship and spiritual life.

Hot Coffee

I drink hot coffee in the morning no matter what the season, but during winter I can drink hot coffee no matter the time. While iced coffee is good, I think hot coffee tastes best and I can enjoy its warmth no matter the time.

Rest

Winter is a perfect season to prioritize rest with its colder temperatures and shorter days. While I’m usually a early bird, making time for the occasional sleeping in during the week goes a long way. It’s also recharging after having a busy fall and holiday season. Rest isn’t just sleep but also time away from my phone and tasks to relax and enjoy being at home.

My January Week

Instead of cramming all my yearly reflections and trying to set goals for the new year into a week between Christmas and New Year, I’ve used the month of January to do these tasks. Going slower to reflect and being intentional to create goals that matter to me for 2026 is something that matters most and gives me life.

There you have it; give things that are saving my life in this winter season. Which of these resonate with you? Which one are you going to implement? Drop me a comment and let me know!
