Growing up my mom would always take me to JC Penney to get an updated photo around my birthday. I now do the same with my kids as they celebrate their birthdays each year. My desire isn’t just to document their growth but also their interests and personality at that given age. The fact that their birthdays are when spring blooms always brings delight.
This year we ventured to Lafayette Square and Park to capture moments. Ezra opted to bring a recent Lego build he wanted to highlight in his photos, while Lillian brought her sketchbook and camera. Both were eager to have some photos taken with their favorite things.
It was a beautiful spring morning when we ventured there and found the park buzzing with festivities. We took several photos at the Kern Pavilion, meandered around the lake and used the park house as a background. As we wrapped up our time we ventured to a nearby street where a beautiful tree was in bloom. Always the model, my daughter jumped at the chance to get more photos taken.
Taking photos of my own children is not always the easiest, especially when it comes to my son. I was thrilled he allowed me to capture solo shots as well as adorable photos of him with his big sister. As I captured these moments of them individually and together, I quickly grew sentimental of their first joint session, seven years ago. I realized the years quickly go – just like spring blooms. I either can capture the moments or it quickly slips from the frame.
