Early Morning Baker | St. Louis Documentary Photographer

Most bakers wake up in the early morning to get their bakes done. For Laura Huskey, owner of Wildflower & Barley, she follows the tradition. I met up with her at a church kitchen where she already was diligently working. She had delicious scones, croissants and cookies cooling nearby for Teleo Coffee and beginning the bagel work.

While Laura is the owner of her own home micro bakery based out of Arnold, Missouri, she also bakes for Teleo. Knowing Teleo’s owner was in a bind during her maternity leave, she quickly jumped into help. She shared details of her work and how the bagel process works.

I learned more about Laura’s beginning as a baker as she worked. She began as a baker at Panera and found it being a peaceful task that gave her some alone time from being a mom to five boys. She attempted baking sourdough at home, gave up but then later, chose to start baking again. Now plans are underway for her to expand into a commercial kitchen which will allow her to provide more baked goods for customers and expand her business to farmers markets.

Her enjoyment of the baking process, trying new things and helping a friend in the process, shows through our time together. It was a joy capturing these moments of her in her element, delighting tastebuds one bake at a time.
