A couple years ago, I sat around the table at my Grandmother’s home while she pulled out numerous photos to share with me. Some were worn, faded or discolored, but as we sat around the table together she invited me into her story. She shared details of the people in the photos which snowballed into one story after another. Stories of my Grandfather’s time in the minor league, their time of running a farm and owning a restaurant, many I had never heard before.
There is something significant about holding a photo and listening to its story that a digital image doesn’t have the ability to do. There is an art of print. It’s dynamic, personal and beautiful.
Preserving the stories
I have become more persistent to make sure the images I capture of my family’s life live outside the cyber world and breathe life into our home. Regardless if you like a print in a frame hung on the wall or like newer methods of printing on wood or canvas, displaying your favorite photos will never be a waste of time.
One way I make sure to update these moments is to annually make a print order. Many times, my older prints sit behind the new one so when I update the frame, I get to relive the moments from years gone by (a genius idea that my mother-in-law shared).
I recently allowed my children to pick their favorite images from our vacations and print them for them so they can have physical treasures from our time spent together. They are carefully placed in a special box of mementos that they have access to whenever they want.
I have so many aspirations to use images around my home in a more dynamic way. Images breathe life into our homes, allow us to look fondly on past moments and showcase the art of print.
