Christmas is always a special time of year, but if I’m not careful it can become too jammed packed, filled with lots of events and to-dos. Here are six things that are saving my life and keeping my Christmas spirit.
Advent Study
For several years I’ve enjoyed slowing down intentionally with an advent study. These studies have helped me reflect on Christ’s birth and anticipate when He returns. I often choose the study from She Reads Truth and also read advent devotional books through the season to help quiet the chaos.
Christmas Movies
From classics like White Christmas to tried-and-true family favorites like Home Alone, there’s nothing like popping in a movie with the family to unwind after the day. There are so many special moments I have with many of these movies it’s fun to pass the love of Christmas movies onto my kids.
Christmas Lights
Growing up, my family would drive around neighborhoods chanting “We’re looking for lights.” I haven’t passed on the chant, but I have loved passing on the tradition of searching for special light displays. We also enjoy the professional light displays our city offers including The Garden Glow, Winter Wonderland, Way of Lights and others. The lights spark joy which helps keeps the Christmas spirit going when it gets dark so quickly each evening.
Hot Drinks
I’m not a winter fan, but one thing I love is being comfortable drinking hot drinks all day. From my French press in the morning to my evening hot tea to unwind from the day, each hot drink fills me with warmth.
Christmas School
The last three weeks, the kids and I have had a slower school session, taking a break from our normal schedules to do A Connected Christmas. This lovely curriculum blends copy work, poems, carols, crafts, read alongs and art studies centered around Jesus and why He came. It’s a beautiful way to get school done, especially in the busy season.
No Bookings
While October and November were filled with fall and Christmas sessions, I intentionally black out my schedule in December. Apart from birth and newborn sessions, I made sure to leave this month open for family, friends and fun. Making this intentional decision has allowed me to enjoy the season, when I might be otherwise stressed with the pile of work waiting for me.
There you have it. Six things that are saving my life in this Christmas season and keeping up my Christmas spirit. Is there something that is saving your life that you want to share? Leave me a comment, I would love to hear all about it!
